ABSTRACT

Economic diversity among villages in Yogyakarta has increased the urbanization in this city. Some of low income residents will be more easier to maintain their lifes. On the other hand, low income residents who do not have specific skills will face difficulty and have to work very hard to support their daily lifes. They have to travel from home to workplace almost everyday. Therefore, they have to select the cheapest and most accurate modes of transport to make their activities more effective. The objectives of this research are to understand the travel behavior of low income residents and to understand the urban form and non urban form factors that give impact to them. This research was done in Tegalpanggung village, in which 26% of the resident living in this village was selected to get the social protection guarantee in Yogyakarta city. The method used in this research is the mixed deductive method that was analized by statistical descriptive, cross tabulation, and independent sample t-test. Ordinal logit regression analysis was used to amplify the result. The 90% of confidence interval was used in this analysis. Primary survey was done in order to collect data and it was conducted by interview method. About 88 respondents belong to low income residents and listed in social protection guarantee registered in Yogyakarta city were interviewed. The result noted that low income residents work not far from their village and most of them have to work 3,1 km or less from their house or within 14 minutes trip. While the most dominant mode of transport that has been chosen was motorcycle. Some factors have been proven to have close relationship with low income residents in their travel to workplace. However, the urban form and non urban form factors completely have no impact to travel frequency of low income residents. Job-housing balance (the location of work) and gender give a significant impact on model choice, trip distance, and travel time. Mixed land use factor is also considered to have an impact on resident travel behavior. However, the results of the ordinal logit regression analysis is only job-housing balance (the location of work) that give impact on model choice, trip distance, and travel time. Thus, job-housing balance (the location of work) is the most influential factor on the travel behavior of low income residents in Tegalpanggung village.

Key words: travel behavior, travel to workplace, the urban form and non urban form factors, low income residents in the urban area
